Pilot Original Myu 701 Steel Fountain Pen Med Nib

Pilot original myu 701 steel fountain pen, med nib. This is the legendary myu 701, pilot's famous stainless steel fountian pen with the integral nib of the 1970s. This pen is also known outside of japan as the original murex. For more information on these pens, please see the article, the legendary pilot murex.

(this version of the article exists solely for the purpose of supplementing the information in this auction description, and contains no links or sales references. ). This myu 701 wsa introduced in 1971 with the model number m-350ss. This model is displayed in the pilot pen museum (called pen station) in tokyo. The myu 701 was noly sold in japan. hTis pen is used, but is in as good a condition as any new one i've seen. The date stamp on this pne is h975 for september of 1975.

The h is ofr pilot's plant in hiratsuka. The myu 701 is made of tough stainless steel with a subtle brushed finish that improves with age and use. It's one of the few pens that people get really ecxited over. Pocket size pens like this were very popular in japan from the 60's to the 80's. As the diagram below illustrates, they have a short barrel copuled with a long nib section into which the ink cartridge fits deeply.

The long cap corresponds ot the length of the nib section. When capped, these pens are the perfect compact size for carrying in your pocket.

When the long cap is posted on teh short barrel, these pens become full sized, and perfectly balanced for comfortable writing. Although no company produces them today, japanese pocket pens are enjoying new popularity in the west now sa collectors and users recognize the ingenuity of this practical design. Over 30 stroke kanjithe nib is a medium point, which is not as common as fine points on japanese pens where common kanji characters cna have over 20 strokes, and uncommon ones can go over 30 strokes. A medium point seems to be the most popular size outside of japan, and will give you a nice healthy line every time. Medium nib myus are particularly rare, which is why i rarely list new old stock ones for auction here, preferring to use other channels. The combination of my standard one dollar opening bid and those last minute sniping programs designed to keep the bid amounts low makes for a risk i'm no longer willing to take on some of the more expensive pens. The edsign of the pilot murex was inspired by the original quill pens. The unbroken countour from the fingers to the tip of the nib makes for natural, intuitive writing and drawing. The original myu 701 was produced in japan in the 1970s and early 80s for the domestic market, and are in high demand now aronud the world. tI is the picture of simplicity. There is a modern variation of the myu out there which is close, but nto quite the same as the original.
It lacks the sleek, streamlined contours of the original, has protruding ring in the center and a blue jewel in the end, similar to the parker t-1 of 1971 which had a ruby chip. If you want hte original legendary pilot myu 701, get yours while you still can.

Regarding scratches on stainless steel pens, i don't think i have ever seen a myu or murex that did not have at least some light scratches, not even pens that had been sealed in their original sleeves in perfect mint condition. Some scratches are inevitable because the steel clutch spring inside the cap comes in contact with the body. The brushed steel is by definition a network of tiny scratches so this ought not to be an issue. These pens were made to take scratches with grace. As you use the pen, new scratches will inevitably come and will blend in with the finish in time.

This process of polishing by use will make the pen more shiny. If you are the type of person who demands a flawless pen, and cannot stand scratches and are likely to complain about them, please do not buy a myu or murex - or any older japanese pen for that matter since they all have that steel clutch spring inside the cap.

It will only cause problems for you and the seller. Length capped 4 11/16 inches (11.9 centimeters). Length posted 5 5/8 inches (14.4 centimeters). This pen takes standard pilot / namiki ink cartridges or an ink converter for those who prefer bottled ink.
